"In approximately 4000 BC We can find them in the homes and temples of the Sumerian Community (Annal). These were put on the walls for decoration and soon became part of the structures of the building. Tessellation comes from the root word tessella, which means small cube or tile. In ancient Rome, they used these tessella on floors and walls to create larger pictures. These early Roman mosaics were only one of many civilizations (Hoopes-Meyers)."
